Barcelona 0-2 Villarreal

On Sunday night, Barcelona were defeated 2-0 at home by a Villarreal side that was ruthlessly efficient.

While the hosts were assured of a second-place finish in a season that manager Xavi said 'might have been worse,' Villarreal's participation in European competition next season hinged on the Champions League semi-finalists improving on Athletic Club's away result against Sevilla.

Barcelona started well despite a lack of incentives. Expectedly controlling possession, but rushing all over the field to reclaim it quickly. However, the yellow shirts were able to run into space behind a high backline as a result of this proactive attitude.

Sergio Busquets was caught collecting a poor pass from Clement Lenglet midway through the first half, igniting a three-v-two breakaway in Villarreal's favor, which Dani Parejo squandered with a bad ball of his own.

Parejo had clearly found his range by the halftime break. Parejo popped a brilliantly weighted pass into the path of the onrushing Alfonso Pedraza with Dani Alves enticed out of place by Manu Trigueros' smart movement infield. The left-back steadied himself goal-side of a snoozing Adama Traore and blasted Villarreal into the lead with their second shot of the game.

Real Sociedad 1-2 Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid clinched third place in LaLiga with a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad on Sunday, thanks to goals from Rodrigo de Paul and Angel Correa.

Diego Simeone's team had already qualified for the Champions League before the final matchday, but they were fortunate not to go behind in the first half at Reale Arena, where Rafinha missed several chances.

De Paul smashed a superb strike home after 50 minutes to punish La Real for not making their dominance pay, before Correa secured the win.

The hosts equalized in the 93rd minute with replacement Jon Guridi, but it was too late; defeat leaves La Real in sixth place, having already qualified for the Europa League.

In the first half, Mikel Merino headed just wide before Rafinha hit the post from point-blank range after Jan Oblak parried a low Alexander Sorloth shot.

Following Sortloth's offload, Rafinha curled wide in a one-on-one situation with Oblak, before the midfielder arrowed narrowly off target on the stroke of half-time.

After the break, Alex Remiro saved a twisting De Paul effort from the edge of the box, while Matheus Cunha hit the crossbar with a deflected strike.

Soon after, De Paul broke the tie by drilling a fizzing right-footed shot into the top-left corner.

Remiro ran out to keep Antoine Griezmann's goal drought alive, before Correa extended Atletico's lead in the 68th minute with a beautiful finish.

After Oblak parried Adnan Januzaj's free-kick, Guridi headed in from close range, but Atleti held on for the win.

Real Madrid 0-0 Real Betis

Real Madrid drew a blank in their penultimate game of the season, but no one at the Santiago Bernabeu seemed to mind as they applauded the players and said their goodbyes to Marcelo, who was almost definitely playing his final game for the club.

Marcelo and Joaquin, who was playing his 600th game in La Liga, bent down to each other in the centre circle when the final whistle blew.
