Highlights

Germany started brighter, and could have taken the lead in the seventh minute, but Leroy Sané's looping shot from the edge of the box went just wide.

Italy made nine changes from their previous match against England and came close to breaking through a minute later, with Manuel Neuer save Giacomo Raspadori. Instead, Germany took the lead first, with Joshua Kimmich coolly converting David Raum's low left-wing centre.

As halftime approached, Gianluigi Donnarumma made three saves as Germany appeared to be the more likely team to score the game's second goal. After Jonas Hofmann was brought down by Alessandro Bastoni, the Italy goalkeeper was beaten just before the break, with lkay Gündoan lofting his penalty kick through the centre.

The Azzurri began the second half with purpose, with Bryan Cristante unable to finish a slick passing move, but any thoughts of a comeback were completely dashed in the 51st minute, when Thomas Müller's half-volley flew just past Donnarumma's reach to set up a three-goal lead.

Serge Gnabry's entrance just after the hour signaled that the home team was not going to back down, and it was the Bayern forward who set up Timo Werner for two close-range goals in as many minutes.

The recent rise of Wilfried Gnonto, the 18-year-old who scored his first international goal from close range after Neuer had fumbled Dimarco's ferocious shot, has been a bright point for Roberto Mancini's side.

In extra time, the latter was also instrumental, giving the corner from which Bastoni scored Italy's second goal, but Germany had already done enough.
