Manchester City 4-3 Real Madrid

The world of football was witness to an epic struggle between two European giants, with England's champions edging out the 13-time Champions League winners in an exciting quarterfinal encounter to set up a mouthwatering return leg in Madrid next week.

The match got off to a fast start, with two goals scored in the first 11 minutes. Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring just three minutes into the game with a diving header from Riyad Mahrez's perfect ball - a shocking goal for a player like him to score, and one that anticipated a night full of surprises.

Gabriel Jesus promptly added a second to give the hosts some breathing room, but Madrid pulled one back shortly before half-time through the in-form Karim Benzema.

Much of the same happened in the second half, with defenses appearing to be non-existent on this occasion. Within 10 minutes of the restart, two goals were scored, with Phil Foden restoring City's two-goal lead before Vinicius Jr scoring a spectacular solo goal to resurrect the tie.

With City controlling possession and Carlo Ancelotti's side relying primarily on the counter, Bernardo Silva made it four for the hosts, only for a Karim Benzema penalty to keep the margins narrow in the tie ahead of the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu next week.

Liverpool 2-0 Villarreal

Liverpool beat Villarreal 2-0 in their Champions League semi-final first leg encounter thanks to an own goal by Pervis Estupinan and a Sadio Mane goal 133 seconds later.

After a tense first half, Liverpool scored two goals in quick succession early in the second to give Jurgen Klopp's team a healthy and deserved advantage going into the second leg on May 3 at Estadio de la Ceramica.

In the first half, Villarreal's strategy of defending deep to neutralize the hosts paid handsomely. In the 11th minute, Mane missed a golden chance by nodding a free header wide from close range.

Liverpool pressed on, firing additional warning shots in the process. Jordan Henderson hit the post with an accidental attempt in the 21st minute, and Mohamed Salah curled a left-footed strike just over the bar six minutes later.

Near the end of the first half, Thiago Alcantara came the closest to scoring. The Spain international hit the post with a 25-yard attempt in the 41st minute.

Villarreal's tenacious defense was shattered early in the second half, as two goals were scored in less than two minutes. When Henderson's cross bounced off Estupinan and into the net, Liverpool took the lead. Moments later, Mane tucked the ball past Geronimo Rulli and into the bottom corner to extend Liverpool's lead.

Even with a two-goal lead, Liverpool's persistent pressure remained. Andy Robertson's goal was disallowed for offside, and Rulli parried a ferocious Virgil van Dijk strike before Luis Diaz pulled a drove shot wide.

Villarreal pushed higher up the pitch after making three substitutions in the 72nd minute, but were unable to create any dangerous goalscoring opportunities and registered zero shots on target, leaving the Europa League champions with plenty of work to do at home on Tuesday.
